lr-nuget-update

A simple tool to keep your NuGet packages up to date when using Central Package Management (Directory.Packages.props).

What it does

This tool scans your solution for all projects and their package dependencies. It then checks NuGet for newer versions and updates your Directory.Packages.props file.

• Centralized: It works with Directory.Packages.props. If you don't have one yet, it will create it for you and move your solution toward Central Package Management.
• Safe updates: By default, it only updates to the latest version within the same Major version. This helps avoid breaking changes while keeping you on the latest bug fixes and minor features.
• Smart discovery: You can run it from anywhere inside your project. It will look at your current directory and if it doesn't find a solution file, it climbs up the folder tree until it finds one.

How to use it

The easiest way to run it without manually installing it is using dnx:

dnx -y lr-nuget-update

If you want to run it against a specific directory instead of your current one, just pass the path:

dnx -y lr-nuget-update ./path/to/your/project

What happens when you run it?

1. Solution Search: It finds your .sln file (searching upwards if needed).
2. Project Scan: It finds all .csproj files in your solution.
3. Version Check: It pulls the current versions from Directory.Packages.props and checks against your configured NuGet sources (including private ones if you have them in nuget.config).
4. Update: It writes the new versions back to Directory.Packages.props.
5. Solution Integration: It makes sure Directory.Packages.props is actually visible in your solution items so you can edit it easily in your IDE.

Requirements

• .NET 10.0 or later.
• A project using or moving to Central Package Management.
